Skagway: Ore Peninsula Redevelopment
- Owner: Municipality of Skagway
- Client/Contractor: Pacific Pile and Marine
- Overall Project Value: $42,100,000
Project Overview:
This project consisted of the demolition of a legacy ore loader dock, and installation of a new cruise ship dock with supporting structures. The new cruise ship dock increased the capacity for cruise ship revenue in the Municipality of Skagway.
The project was a demanding survey; aside from the technical nature of the survey work needed for the project, inclement winter weather, marine conditions, tight timelines, and a host of other considerations challenged the crew. Although not a design-build project, each phase of the build needed to be surveyed and analyzed in real-time to ensure the next portion of the structure would fit per the design.
Survey Specific Tasks:
- Coordinated with multiple barge and crane crews to layout marine piling of various sizes during all phases of the project.
- Upland survey for the installation of an access trestle, which required the capture of topographic data, pile layout, and as-built data.
- Plan set QC/QA throughout the project as it specifically related to upcoming phases of the build.
- Used survey-grade GPS to aid barge crews to both confirm the location of undersea utilities, and set and record coordinates of barge anchors for updated Notice to Mariners in Taiya Inlet.
- Provided survey related recommendations to the contractor throughout all phases of the build.
